Communication within the brain occurs at synapses numbering in the trillions which are inherently plastic and whose function may be modulated both rapidly and persistently. These synapses connect billions of neurons, forming both local and distributed circuits. Our goal is to understand how cortical microcircuits utilize these connections to generate flexible and reliable representations of different types of behaviors and how these distributed representations are altered in disease.
